Once upon a time there was a gate ....
I believe this is the third and final attempt to put a gate across this regionally owned private road.
It started with this road going through a gap in a line of fence (where the gate is now). The region wanted to stop people using the road, so a gate was put up - and it promptly fell down.
A slightly stronger gate replaced it - it drooped, sagged and almost collapsed.
Then the region decided to enlarge a nearby drainage ditch, and removed all the fencing next to the gate.
Months later the second gate was taken down, and this gate to end all gates was constructed from 4" x 4" and 6" x 6" steel tubing, with foundations to suit. It's built like a battleship. Click the photo to see what I mean.
As you can see, it certainly stops people using the road. So now, they just go around it :-)
One day the region may remember to put the fences back ....

...and a handsome gate it is too.....pity it's completely useless! Money well spent? - well, maybe if they ever re-attach the fence to it.....
Thanks for the comment Meg.
But spending someone else's money on a needless article these days is deemed politically correct :-)
