It seems that the intermittent fault plaguing my Canon PowerShot A95 is caused by a bad CCD image sensor, and even though the warranty has long since expired Canon will repair it free of charge :-))
Thanks very much Canon, your good reputation remains completely intact as far as I'm concerned.
