If I wanted to do this shot - I couldn't!!

HELP!!!! My camera (Canon PowerShot A95 -and a bit ancient) has started giving me trouble. Occasionally I get this effect, and it's happening more frequently lately :-(

Does anyone know the cause of this - or better still - the fix??

Please don't say get another camera, I can't afford one right now :-(

By the way this was taken in a coffee shop - not an ice cream store!
